Tour of Canterbury, Dover, Leeds Castle
Canterbury is a city in southern England, located not far from London. It has 43,431 inhabitants according to the 2001 census. It is part of the City of Canterbury district.
Dover is an important city in the United Kingdom, located in the extreme south-eastern part of the island, corresponding to the strait of the same name and close to the famous White Cliffs.
Leeds Castle is an English castle in medieval and Renaissance style, built between the 12th and 16th centuries on two islands in an artificial lake (formed by the damming of the River Len) in the village of Leeds, a town in Kent (south-eastern England) located near Maidstone and forming part of the borough of the same name.
Defined by many as “the most beautiful (or the most romantic) castle in England”, if not even “the most beautiful castle in the world” (a definition which is due, among others, to Lord Conway]) and nicknamed “Ladies’ Castle” or “Lady’s Castle” for its historical association with female figures, it was built in 1119 by the Normans and was a royal residence for almost three centuries, from 1278 until 1552 (Tudor era), as well as a prison (especially during the Napoleonic Wars but not only) and a garrison and “theater” of numerous clashes in the fight for succession to the throne of England.
It hosted various queens (such as Eleanor of Castile, Isabella of Castile, Joanna of Navarre, Catherine of Valois, Catherine of Aragon, etc.), particularly during their widowhood or divorce, and among its most famous guests was also King Henry VIII, of whom a life-size bust was erected on site.
In addition to the royal family, it was owned by the Fairfax, Culpepper and Wykeham Martins families.
Its last owner was an Anglo-American heiress known as Lady Baillie, who lived there until her death in 1974. Currently administered by the Leeds Castle Foundation, it has been open to the public since 1976 and is also used for conferences, receptions, concerts, banquets, weddings, etc.
